Micah woke up the next morning with a smile on his face. In fact, he was fairly certain that he’d slept with one all night long and the effort it took to tamp it down before going into work on Monday morning was stupid.

“So….” Mrs. Green teased, typing away at her computer as if she wasn’t the least bit curious about her employer’s love life.

“So?” Micah grunted, shifting the backpack he carried. “Do I have a full schedule today?”

She gasped and slapped her hands on the counter. “You know exactly what I’m talking about!” the middle aged woman cried. She pointed a long fingernail at him. “Now…I made you cinnamon rolls. I want to know how the date went.”

Micah raised an eyebrow and shook his head. “I helped you win the bet. I never agreed to spread gossip about my dating life.”

“Ah-ha!” she shouted back. “It was a date! I knew it!”

He rolled his eyes. “That wasn’t much of a secret. I asked her to dinner, it’s why you had to make me the cinnamon rolls.”

“Did you eat them after the date?”

“I’m going to my office now!” Micah called out. He walked away, still hearing her shout at him from the desk. The grin was back, though for a different reason, and Micah shut the door on the noise.

He set his backpack on the floor and slumped into his chair with a sigh. Comfortable. Huh…that was a word that he hadn’t used in a while. This place, this tiny speck of a town on the coast, was becoming comfortable.

His secretary teased him like she was his mother, he was getting to know his patients, he was serving and giving back to the community, and he was dating a semi-local. Yeah…comfortable was probably the best way to say it.

It was completely unexpected and a far cry from what Micah had been envisioning when he’d moved away from his hometown, but it also felt amazingly good.

His phone buzzed and Micah scrambled to get it out of his pocket, opening the front screen.

Dude. Gav wrenched his shoulder last night. Can you look at it?

Chuckling, Micah set the phone down and woke up his laptop. Now he knew he’d been accepted by the masses. When people began asking for special favors because he was a doctor, it meant he’d become one of them.

“Unless you’re an old man in a grocery store,” Micah muttered as he pulled up today’s schedule. Searching for a few free minutes, he pursed his lips, then grabbed the phone.

12:50 It’s the only open slot I’ve got.

Got it. He’ll be there. Did you see the game last night? Mariners took it by 4!

Before Micah could answer back, his phone rang. “Busy morning,” he grumbled as he accepted the call. “Hey, Mom. How are you?”

“I know it’s early. You’re not with a patient, are you?”

Micah closed his eyes and shook his head. “If I had been with a patient, I wouldn’t have answered the phone, Mom.”

“Right. I knew that, but…still…”

“Is something wrong?” Micah leaned forward, his brow furrowing.
